Hey there, fellow travellers and adventure seekers!
We’re thrilled to share our upcoming journey to Darwin with you. This trip holds a special place in our hearts as we’ll be visiting our daughter, and son-in-law, and spending time with our first grandson on his home soil. We’re also excited to explore the sights of Darwin and the surrounding areas, making this trip a perfect blend of family time and adventure.
The Road to Darwin
Our journey begins with a drive up the Great Northern Highway, a route that promises stunning landscapes and plenty of opportunities for off-road exploration. We’re planning to take our time, spending about two weeks to reach Darwin. This pace allows us to fully appreciate the beauty of the outback, with its vast open spaces and unique wildlife.
As we travel, we’ll be camping under the stars, enjoying the serenity that only the Australian wilderness can offer. Our trusty Unimog will carry us through rugged terrains, while our cozy rooftop tent will provide a comfortable resting spot each night.
Time in Darwin
Once we arrive in Darwin, we’ll be spending a couple of weeks soaking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city. Darwin is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and beautiful natural surroundings. We’re looking forward to visiting iconic spots like Mindil Beach, the Darwin Waterfront, Gunn Point and the stunning Litchfield National Park. (Sorry Toppa, you will miss out on this one mate)
But the highlight of our time in Darwin will undoubtedly be spending quality time with our family. We’ve met our grandson before, but this will be our first visit to his home. We’re looking forward to creating lasting memories with him, our daughter, our son-in-law and his parents Karen and Gary, exploring their local favourites and just enjoying being together.
The Coastal Journey Home
After our stay in Darwin, we’ll take the scenic coastal route back home, extending our adventure over three weeks. This slower pace will allow us to fully immerse ourselves in the coastal beauty of Western Australia.
Our first major stop will be Exmouth, where we plan to explore the stunning coastal landscapes and enjoy the serene beaches.
From there, we’ll make our way to one of our favourite spots: Denham and Shark Bay. Maybe the fish and chips at the pub have improved by now! - one can only hope... Ha Ha
Sharing Our Journey
As always, we’ll be documenting our travels, sharing the breathtaking views, and offering tips and insights for those who might want to embark on a similar adventure. Whether it’s advice on off-road camping, tips for travelling with family, or simply sharing the joy of exploring new places, we’re excited to bring you along for the ride.
Stay tuned for updates, photos, and stories from our journey to Darwin and back. We hope our experiences inspire you to hit the road and explore the incredible beauty that Australia has to offer.
Until next time, happy travels and safe adventures!

Hello, fellow adventurers and archery enthusiasts!
Welcome to our blog, where we document our journey across Australia in our trusty 1983 Unimog truck, affectionately known for its quirks and undeniable charm. This isn't just any ordinary road trip—it's a blend of exploring breathtaking landscapes, immersing ourselves in the great outdoors, and indulging in our shared passion for archery, and working on the road.
The Dream to Explore
For as long as we can remember, the open road has called to us. The allure of Australia's diverse landscapes, from its rugged coastlines to its vast outback, has always been a dream. With our Unimog, a beast of a machine designed to handle anything we throw at it, we have the perfect companion for this grand adventure.
Our Unimog isn't the fastest vehicle on the road. With a top speed of about 90 km/h, we have plenty of time to take in the scenery, make spontaneous detours, and discover hidden gems along the way. Plus, the modifications we've made to the truck ensure it can tackle even the toughest off-road tracks with ease.
The Archery Journey
But this trip is about more than just seeing the sights. Bridget and I share a deep love for archery, a sport that brings us closer to nature and each other. For Bridget, this journey marks her first foray into archery, while I look forward to getting more serious about a hobby I've dabbled in over the years.
Our goal is to visit as many field and 3D archery clubs as we can find. We plan to participate in shoots, learn from other archers, and share our experiences. There's something magical about standing in a quiet forest, bow in hand, focusing on the target ahead. It's a feeling we can't wait to share with fellow enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Meeting Like-Minded People
One of the most exciting aspects of our journey is the opportunity to meet other like-minded individuals. There's a special bond that forms between people who share a passion for the same sport, especially one as engaging as archery. We hope to swap stories, exchange tips, and maybe even pick up a few new skills along the way.
Ambassadors for the Sport
As we travel, we aim to be ambassadors for archery. We want to showcase the sport's accessibility and appeal, encouraging others to give it a try. Whether it's a seasoned archer we meet at a club shoot or a curious passerby at a campsite, we hope to inspire a love for archery in everyone we encounter.
The Road Ahead
Our journey is just beginning, and we can't wait to see where it takes us. We'll be documenting our adventures, sharing the highs and lows, and providing a glimpse into what it's like to live on the road in an old Unimog. We'll also be offering tips and insights for those looking to embrace a frugal, adventurous lifestyle.
So, whether you're here for the travel tales, the archery insights, or just to follow along on our journey, we're glad to have you with us. Let's hit the road, embrace the unknown, and make unforgettable memories together.
Stay tuned for more updates from the road, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any archery tips or travel recommendations. See you out there!
Happy travels and happy shooting,
Mike, Bridget, and Toppa
